If your tempted to take that too far off road, don’t.
Take one of the glacier tours, etc...

Take sufficient money with you. Eating out can be expensive and alcohol more so.

Noice! I always wanted to drive there, but stuck to the southwest (within 2 hours of Reyk). The whole interior is a giant spiderweb of packed stone roadways, with random airports and towns in the middle of nowhere.

I was in Iceland in 2012 and booked the least expensive (Iceland isn’t into cheapest, it was €500) car I could find for a week. I went up to the hire company’s premises and saw this tiny red car outside. I thought to myself “I’m not getting that, am I?”
Yup. Previous gen i10.
Most basic car I’ve come across in a long time (intermittent wipe? central locking? Nope) but did the job.

You’re not actually allowed drive off road in Iceland, although they define “road” rather widely.

There’s actually nothing but glaciers and volcanic ash in the interior though, isn’t there? The small towns and airports (they needed them because they didn’t have a road around the country until recently) are all round the edge.

Should be fine as long as you stay off the F-roads. I have a coworker who drove a rented iQ out to the Latrabjarg bird cliffs, which are a good ways away from Reykjavik. A lot of the normal roads are gravel once you get out of the SW corner of the country, but they are generally well maintained, so no need for a 4x4.
Enjoy the trip! I loved it there.

90% of the people live near the ring road, but IMHO you’re going to Iceland for the scenery, geology, etc. All of the cultural stuff can be had elsewhere. Frankly the ring road is kind of boring, but it’s definitely pretty efficient.

Ye’, their roads outside of the main population areas are what I’d pretty much call off road as many are merely tracks, fun tracks, but tracks.

I am still trying to book my flight home from London for my summer trip to Europe (only booked one way so far). Since flight prices are exorbitant in July for that route, I am considering cheapo alternatives like flying through Iceland on Wow Airlines. I can manage a 2 day “layover” there and since the sun doesnt really set in the summer I can actually make a decent exploration trip out of it. Definitely interested to hear about your trip. I am trying to put together a 2-day itinerary in Iceland including renting a car and hiking somewhere really cool somehow. Seems like a great place for an extended layover for someone who loves nature.
Currently thinking about just driving up to Thingvellir National Park to do some hiking as well as check out the geysers and waterfalls that are supposed to be popular around there. Nice thing is that most rentals are manuals so that should be fun at least.
